Amsterdam’s local government announced on Wednesday a significant measure in its effort to combat mass tourism, stating that no new hotel buildings will be allowed in the city.
The decision is aimed at maintaining the livability of the city for both residents and visitors.
“We want to make and keep the city liveable for residents and visitors. This means: no over-tourism, no new hotels, and no more than 20 million hotel overnight stays by tourists per year,” the statement read.
Under the new policy, a new hotel can only be constructed if an existing hotel closes, ensuring that the overall number of sleeping places remains unchanged.
Additionally, any new hotel must demonstrate improvements, such as increased sustainability.
It’s important to note that this rule does not apply to new hotels that had already obtained permits before the announcement.
Amsterdam has actively sought to manage tourist numbers, especially in areas like the red light district, where sex and drug-related tourism have been discouraged.
