Dozens escape Comoros prison by simply walking through main gate

Dozens of prisoners in the Comoros managed to escape from Moroni Prison by simply walking out of the main gate, according to authorities.

The public prosecutor attributed the jailbreak to negligent security guards, while a government spokesman suggested it was pre-planned.

The escape, involving 38 men, occurred early in the morning at the dilapidated and overcrowded Moroni Prison, which currently holds more than 200 inmates, double its capacity.

An investigation has been launched, with Public Prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid linking the breakout to a soldier previously jailed for the death of a football fan during a World Cup qualifying match.

He stated, “The escape was instigated by the soldier who fired the shots at the Malouzini football stadium in Moroni.”

Reports from Comoros Infos mentioned possible “insider collusion” in facilitating the escape, highlighting a recurring issue at Moroni Prison.

This incident is not the first of its kind at the prison. In 2020, similar jailbreaks occurred under unclear circumstances, with inmates taking advantage of events such as national football team victories to abscond.
