A statement released by the Ekiti state government revealed that six students, three teachers, and a bus driver were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the town of Emure, south-western Nigeria, while returning from a road trip on Monday night.

Governor Abiodun Oyebanji assured the public that efforts are underway to rescue the abducted individuals, urging residents to cooperate with authorities and provide any relevant information to aid in the search.

The identity of the perpetrators and whether they have made any ransom demands remain unclear.

Kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly prevalent in Nigeria, with armed gangs targeting travelers, students, and residents in both rural and urban areas.

Earlier on Monday, around 50 civil society organizations called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency regarding the country’s security situation, citing over 1,800 abductions since the president took office in May of the previous year.
