Drivers Announce Revised Fare Hike After Talks with Transport Ministry

The National Executives of the Concerned Drivers Association have rejected announcements by its regional counterparts, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).

The GPRTU initially declared a 30 percent hike in transport fares, effective Monday, April 8, 2024.

However, in a recent joint press statement, the Concerned Drivers Association and other transport operators in Ghana have announced a different approach.

The Association has declared a 15 percent increase for intra-city fares and a 20 percent increase for intercity fares, effective Saturday, April 13, 2024.

Asonoba Nana Wiredu, the Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, in an interview on Western Echo Show, expressed surprise at the sudden announcement by the GPRTU.

He stated that the drivers’ union had engaged in multiple discussions with the Transport Ministry regarding the proposed increments.

Mr Wiredu highlighted the challenges faced by drivers, including the continuous surge in fuel prices, which has significantly impacted their livelihoods and made it challenging to sustain their operations.

The adjustments to transport fares came after deliberations with the Transport Ministry, according to Mr. Wiredu.

He emphasized the importance of cooperation between transport unions and government authorities to address concerns.
