Bridge Collapse Kills One, Injures Five in Russia
A road bridge collapsed onto railway tracks in western Russia, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to five other individuals, according to local authorities.
Following the collapse on Monday in Vyazma, Smolensk region, all train operations were stopped.
Additionally, around 8,000 households faced gas shortages due to damage to pipelines caused by the incident.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse of the Paninsky overpass. Initial reports suggest that the bridge’s old age may have contributed to the collapse.
Residents had reportedly been urging authorities to repair the overpass due to safety concerns, as stated by the 112 Telegram channel.
There were several vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collapse, with subsequent images from the scene showing an overturned car and a truck.
Vasiliy Anokhin, the Regional Governor, mentioned that six out of seven spans of the bridge collapsed.
Three of the injured individuals were transported to Moscow, while a 14-year-old girl is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Expressing condolences, Governor Anokhin emphasized the ongoing efforts of over 160 emergency personnel working tirelessly through the night to restore train operations promptly.
