Northern Region: One dead, several injured in military-resident clash in Karaga
In the Karaga District of the Northern Region, a clash between residents and the military has resulted in one reported death and injuries to two others.
According to sources at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, a young girl died from bullet wounds, while two individuals with serious injuries are receiving medical treatment.
The incident occurred during disturbances in the Karaga township on Monday morning, involving gunshots fired by individuals reportedly dressed in military uniforms and using armored vehicles and police trucks.
The situation escalated when these individuals attempted to arrest the Regent of Karaga, Adam Sumani, at the old Karaga Palace.
Residents mobilized to resist the arrest, leading to a chaotic confrontation.
During the clash, gunshots were fired for about 45 minutes, injuring 12 people.
Three of the injured were taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where one of them passed away.
Additionally, there was a house-to-house search conducted by the military personnel for nearly two hours.
This incident comes amidst ongoing tensions in Karaga over the past two years, marked by occasional violence.
The conflict stems from the appointment of Abdulai Nantogma as the Chief of Karaga by the overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II, two years ago.
However, some residents in Karaga support Mahama Sumani as Kar-Naa, leading to resistance against Abdulai Nantogma’s appointment.
The recent passing of Mahama Sumani on March 12, 2024, and the assumption of his son Adam Sumani as the regent of Karaga have fueled the recent disturbances.
