Western Region Agriculture Department Implements Initiatives to Boost Food Security

To improve food security in the western region, the regional department of agriculture is implementing the E-extension, rearing for food and jobs, and planting for food and jobs phase 2.

This move forms part of the government’s effort to create employment in the full agriculture value chain as well as ensure food security in the country.

Delivering a speech at the 67th Independence Day parade held at Gyandu Park, the Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, said the region would work hard to safeguard agriculture production.

He said, “The government has now moved from its main agriculture policy of planting for food and jobs, phase one, to phase two, more into commercialization. We, therefore, encourage the citizens of the Western region to get involved in this project. This is to create employment, ensure food security, and create wealth in the western region.”

On education, the minister highlighted some strides the NPP government has made in the region.

He remarked that there has been a growing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, or STEM education.

Mr. Darko Mensah underscored how significantly the program has benefited the region and the resource capacity given to various senior high schools.

“Ladies and gentlemen, in recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana.

Recognizing the significance of preparing our students for the evolving technological landscape, several senior high schools have emerged with specialized STEM programmes such as engineering, biomedical, aviation, aerospace, and robotics, which are tailored to equip students with skills and knowledge for careers in these programmes.”

“Western Region has benefited from the STEM program, where STEM centres have been built at Fijai Senior High School and Ghana Secondary Technical School.

These centres will be resourced with computers, smart boards, and other necessary equipment to facilitate the STEM programme in the region.”
