A medical school lecturer in Bangladesh has been suspended, just two days after allegedly shooting and injuring a student during a classroom incident.

Raihan Sharif, the lecturer, was arrested shortly after the incident but was suspended following protests by students from the medical college involved.

The injured student underwent surgery and remains hospitalized, while Dr. Sharif is in police custody.

Reports suggest that during an oral exam, Dr. Sharif allegedly got into an argument with a student, Arafat Amin Tomal, and then shot him in the right knee.

Fortunately, the bullet struck Mr. Amin’s mobile phone, sparing him from life-threatening injuries.

According to police statements, Dr. Sharif had an illegal pistol and was known for carrying weapons to school, which he would display during lectures.

Following the incident, a protest by students led to Dr. Sharif’s suspension, sparking widespread condemnation for the delayed action despite his arrest.

Local media reported that a large number of weapons were found in Dr. Sharif’s possession, including two pistols, ammunition, magazines, knives, and daggers.

The police have formed a special committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Such occurrences are rare in Bangladesh, where strict regulations govern gun ownership and use.
