Akufo-Addo backs ECOWAS and AU democracy restoration efforts
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reiterated his unwavering support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) in their endeavors to uphold democracy across Africa.
The President strongly denounced the recent surge of military coups and interventions that have eroded democratic governance in various parts of the continent.
He expressed deep concern about the palpable anxiety and tension prevailing throughout West Africa, which threatens regional stability and undermines hard-won democratic progress.
Highlighting the imperative of reversing this democratic regression promptly, President Akufo-Addo affirmed Ghana’s steadfast commitment to backing ECOWAS and the AU in their missions to restore democratic norms in affected nations.
Moreover, he underscored the necessity of reforming global governance structures, such as the United Nations Security Council, to enhance accountability and representation, thereby bolstering global peace and stability and fortifying democratic principles worldwide.
The President’s address coincided with a series of political upheavals and violence in several African nations, leading to the overthrow of legitimate governments and the suspension of constitutional order.
