Ghana Federation of Disability President Raises Concerns Over Discrimination and Access to Services

President of the Ghana Federation of Disability in the Western Region, Richard Asare, says its members feel discriminated against, especially in public places.

He lamented that the treatment meted out to disabled people can lead to mental issues such as depression.

Mr. Asare said, that often disabled persons do not get to access some critical services largely due to their deformity, adding that, it should not stop people from treating them right.

Section 4(1) of the Disability Act, 2006 states that a person shall not discriminate against, exploit, or subject a person with a disability to abusive or degrading treatment.

Mr. Asare bemoaned how disabled persons struggle to make decent ends meet, even though it has been stated in Section 9 that the ministry shall, through the public employment centres, assist in securing jobs for persons with disability.

Mr. Asare, in an interview on Spice 91.9 FM’s Adzekyee Mu Nsem (Morning Show), said the Federation looks forward to the government settling arrears owed toll booth workers, as their livelihoods depend on it.

He also called on stakeholders to support persons with disability as they also deserve a chance to live a better life.
