The Home Office is launching an investigation after a birth certificate, submitted for a passport application, had the word “Israel” crossed out, sparking concerns of antisemitism.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) shared a picture of the document on social media, revealing signs of damage including tearing.

The parents’ birthplaces, listed as Israel, were altered, with the father’s being crossed out while the mother’s remained untouched.

Expressing deep concern, the CAA labeled the incident as “completely unacceptable” and emphasized the parents’ distress.

Home Secretary James Cleverly responded swiftly, promising urgent investigation and appropriate action.

Security Minister Tom Tugendhat affirmed the Home Office’s commitment to looking into the matter.

According to the CAA, the birth certificate was submitted with a passport application for a six-month-old girl, stressing that such treatment was unjustifiable merely due to Israel’s status as a Jewish state.

The CAA emphasized the need to restore confidence in the authorities, particularly regarding the security of the Jewish community, whose trust in the government was already low.

Acknowledging Cleverly’s prompt response, the CAA thanked him on social media.
