Today marks the inauguration of MMDAs
Today, February 12, 2024, the Office of the President and the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development have arranged for the inauguration of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) nationwide.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the inauguration aims to facilitate the swearing-in of newly elected and appointed members of the MMDAs.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance local governance and decentralization, fostering participatory decision-making at the grassroots level.
The Ministry emphasized that this event aligns with Article 35, Clause 6 (d) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the state to promote decentralization and citizen participation in governance.
Additionally, Section 16 (1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016, Act 936, underscores the importance of Assembly members maintaining close contact with their electoral areas, consulting constituents on district issues, gathering their opinions, and engaging in communal and developmental activities.
Furthermore, the Ministry encourages all citizens to actively engage with their MMDAs and participate in decision-making processes within their communities through their elected Assembly members following the inauguration of the assemblies.
