Rapper Killer Mike detained after winning three Grammy awards
US rapper Killer Mike was detained following an altercation shortly after winning three Grammy awards, according to Los Angeles police.
The incident occurred at the Crypto.com Arena where the ceremony took place.
Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Render and is 48 years old, was charged with a misdemeanor and later released, with a court appearance scheduled for later this month.
Video footage showed him being escorted by police from the scene in handcuffs.
The altercation came shortly after Killer Mike won three Grammy awards, his first in two decades.
His song “Scientists & Engineers,” featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, won awards for best rap song and best rap performance.
Additionally, his album “Michael” won best rap album.
Upon receiving his awards, Killer Mike addressed critics, saying, “This is for all the people who think you’re too old to rap… we keep hip-hop alive. Never ever stop doing what you do.”
Eyewitnesses reported hearing calls of “free Mike” as the rapper was taken away.
Killer Mike is known for his activism on issues affecting the Black community, including police brutality and racism.
The Grammy Awards were marked by Taylor Swift’s historic fourth win for best album.
