A parent of a student at Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate an incident where his son, a final year Visual Arts student named Ebenezer Yeboah, was allegedly severely beaten by a teacher at the school.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at Bechem Government Hospital in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

Reportedly, the teacher (whose identity is withheld) subjected Yeboah and five other students to harsh beatings for failing to pay “dining fees,” resulting in multiple bruises on Yeboah’s face.

The incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, January 30, 2024. During a visit to the hospital, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that Yeboah’s head was bandaged, and he was lying on a hospital bed attended to by nurses.

Mrs. Lawrinda Yeboah, the victim’s mother, received a distress call from a fellow student informing her about her son’s hospitalization.

She revealed that the teacher’s actions were allegedly prompted by the student’s inability to pay “dining fees.” Mrs. Yeboah appealed to the GES to promptly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.

During a visit to the school, a teacher confirmed the incident, but the headmaster was unavailable due to a ongoing meeting. Mr. Yaw Frimpong, the Public Relations Officer of the Tano South Municipal Directorate of Education, stated that the headmaster had officially informed the Directorate.

He mentioned that two management members and the headmaster had visited Yeboah at the hospital, promising an investigation. Frimpong urged the parents to remain calm as the Directorate worked towards ensuring justice in the matter.
