Okada riders seek government action to lower emissions levy

Okada Riders

The leadership of the Okada Riders Association plans to submit a petition to the Ministry of Transport next Monday, urging a reconsideration of the emissions levy.

The recently enacted Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), which imposes charges on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for internal combustion engine vehicles, took effect yesterday.

The levy amount varies depending on the vehicle type and engine capacity. Motorcycles and tricycles are required to pay GH₵75 annually, while motor vehicles, buses, and coaches with up to 3000 cubic centimeters must pay GH₵150 per year.

For motor vehicles, buses, and coaches exceeding 3000 cubic centimeters, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks, the annual levy is set at GH₵300. In an interview with, Majid Amidu, Secretary of the Okada Riders Association, expressed concern about the high levy charges. He stated their intention to draft a petition to the government, citing the economic strain on individuals.

Amidu emphasized that the proposed levy is excessive, considering the challenges faced by the people. He conveyed the association’s dissatisfaction, highlighting the lack of government support and job opportunities for its members.

Amidu mentioned plans to hold a meeting and prepare a petition, asserting that if the government does not reconsider the levy, a demonstration against the government will be organized. The petition is expected to be ready by Monday, and the association intends to submit it to the Minister of Transport.
