Ecowas faces exodus: Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdraw from regional bloc

Ecowas

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have declared their intention to exit the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), a decision that comes after the bloc had suspended them due to their military-led governments.

The three nations, which were among the founding members of Ecowas in 1975, cited reasons of sovereignty for their withdrawal.

In a jointly issued statement broadcasted on state media, the governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso expressed dissatisfaction with Ecowas, accusing it of straying from its original principles and succumbing to foreign influences, thus failing to address the jihadist insurgency plaguing their countries.

Tensions between Ecowas and the three nations heightened following military coups in Niger (2021), Burkina Faso (2022), and Mali (2020).

Ecowas had consistently urged these nations to restore civilian rule.

In response to the withdrawal announcement, Ecowas emphasized the importance of the three countries within the community and reiterated its commitment to resolving the political deadlock through dialogue.

However, formal notification of withdrawal has not been received, and according to Ecowas regulations, a one-year notice period is required for withdrawal.

Despite facing suspension and diplomatic pressure, the military leaders in these countries have remained steadfast in their stance, accusing Ecowas of being influenced by external forces.

They have also sought closer ties with Russia and formed a mutual defense pact called The Alliance of Sahel States.

The military regimes in these nations argue that their priority is to restore security before holding elections, as they grapple with jihadist threats affiliated with al Qaeda and Islamic State.

Niger’s military leaders have proposed a transition period of up to three years, while Mali’s scheduled elections in February have been postponed indefinitely.

Burkina Faso plans to hold elections in the summer but emphasizes that combating insurgency remains paramount.

A planned Ecowas delegation meeting with the junta in Niger was postponed due to technical issues with the aircraft. The meeting aimed to discuss sanctions on the country imposed by the bloc.
