Niger’s military leader rejected releasing the ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum, in response to Ecowas’ offer to lift sanctions.

Despite Ecowas’ persistent demands for Bazoum’s release since his house arrest in July and concerns about his whereabouts following a failed escape attempt, the military leader stood firm.

Ecowas, following a summit addressing the ongoing crisis due to military takeovers in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, reiterated the call for a return to civilian rule in Niger.

Despite threats of military intervention and trade suspensions, the junta’s stance remained unchanged.

During the summit, Ecowas urged Bazoum’s release and a reduction in the three-year transition period proposed by the junta.

However, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, Niger’s military leader, declined Bazoum’s release but agreed to consider shortening the transition period without specifying the duration.

In response, Ecowas reaffirmed the maintenance of sanctions on Niger while initiating the formation of a committee to collaborate with the junta in devising a transition plan.

The gradual easing of sanctions would depend on the outcomes of these talks.

Following Bazoum’s failed escape attempt via helicopter on October 19, family members have had no contact with him since the day before the incident.

Post-coup, the relatives have raised concerns about the mistreatment they’ve faced under the new military regime.
