Nigerian police arrest Mr. Ibu’s Son for alleged theft of treatment funds

Okafor

Authorities in Nigeria have apprehended the son and adopted daughter of renowned Nigerian comedian John Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, on charges of embezzling funds earmarked for the actor’s medical treatment.

Onyeabuchi Okafor and Jasmine Okekeagwu are accused of gaining access to the actor’s phone and hacking into his bank account details, leading to the misappropriation of 55 million naira ($60,700; £47,800) collected from supporters for his medical expenses following a prolonged illness last year.

Mr. Okafor’s illness necessitated the amputation of one of his legs, and he underwent five surgical procedures, as confirmed by his family.

Authorities have reportedly recovered 50 million naira, according to Mayegun Aminat, spokesperson for the police’s criminal investigation department. Aminat also stated that the suspects had plans to flee to the UK.

A Lagos court has granted the duo bail amounting to $56,000 as investigations proceed, local media sources disclosed. They are slated to appear in court for further proceedings in March.
