Kenya makes landmark discovery of coltan reserves, signaling potential economic boom

Kenya’s Minister for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Salim Mvurya, has officially announced the discovery of coltan deposits in the country.

Coltan, a rare mineral crucial for manufacturing electric car batteries and electronic devices, has primarily been sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which holds over 70% of the world’s reserves and has been linked to conflicts in the region.

The extent of Kenya’s coltan deposits is yet to be determined, with mining officials conducting ground assessments in six counties where the mineral has been found.

Minister Mvurya emphasized the significance of the discovery, stating, “It is now official” that Kenya possesses coltan reserves.

Residents in the affected counties, such as Embu County in eastern Kenya, have been urged to retain their land as the mineral discovery is expected to bring economic benefits.

Nebart Muriuki, an MP from Embu County, highlighted the importance of preserving land, stating, “A precious mineral has been found here, and if you want to benefit, you should not sell your land.”

Minister Mvurya anticipates that the coltan discovery will lead to job creation and the expansion of Kenya’s mining industry.

While mining currently contributes less than 1% to Kenya’s GDP, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) suggests its potential to contribute up to 10%.

Coltan, when refined into metallic tantalum, is a heat-resistant powder used to produce capacitors for electronic devices.

The international demand for coltan is rapidly increasing, driving its price. On average, a kilogram of coltan fetches $48 (£37), according to Forbes.

The growth in demand has contributed to conflicts in the DRC, where rival militias vie for control of mines producing coltan and other valuable minerals.

In summary, Kenya’s official announcement of coltan deposits is expected to have economic implications, potentially boosting the country’s mining industry, creating jobs, and aligning with the global demand for the valuable mineral.
