Mysterious disease kills over 900 cattle in Mozambique’s central region
Mozambique is grappling with a mysterious disease that has killed over 900 cattle in the central region since December, causing alarm among authorities.
The outbreak, unidentified by breeders and veterinary officials, originated in the Manica province, bordering Zimbabwe, and has now affected three districts.
Concerned farmers are urgently seeking intervention from veterinary authorities to prevent further losses, expressing fears of the disease spreading and causing more casualties.
Fernando Cupenha, a breeder from Manica’s Manhene village, a heavily impacted area, describes the disease’s key features as a noticeable loss of appetite and strength in the animals.
He emphasizes the potential threat to food security and livelihoods.
Luís Sabonete, another farmer, voices frustration, claiming that provincial livestock authorities have not responded since collecting blood samples from sick animals for analysis.
Last year, a rare tick-borne disease resulted in the death of nearly 400 cattle in the Chinhambudzi village, located on the Zimbabwean border within Manica province.
