Energy Expert Urges Public Caution in Electricity Use Amidst Government’s 15% VAT Imposition

The public is being urged to be measured in the use of electricity, especially in their households.

This is according to an energy expert, Dr. Sidi Ali of the Africa Center for Energy Security.

Dr. Sidi Ali was reacting to the government’s imposition of a 15 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on domestic electricity consumers above lifelong consumption on Spice 91.9FM’s Adzekyee Mu Nsem Morning Show with host Felix Ampem Darko.

He said utility consumers stand to bear the brunt of this new tax introduced on electricity.

Dr. Ali entreated the government as a matter of urgency to fix problems in the energy sector and be disciplined in its expenditure.

Meanwhile, the government has justified the 15 per cent VAT it is imposing on electricity consumption.

The government hopes to raise more revenue as part of its COVID-19 recovery program, and as part of the measures taken, it directed the imposition of VAT on electricity.
