Cape Verde stuns Ghana in AFCON 2023 with late, injury-time goal
On Sunday night at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde delivered a stunning 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana.
Cape Verde took control early in the game, capitalizing on a mistake by Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori. Ofori parried a weak shot, inadvertently setting up Jamiro Monteiro, who calmly tapped the ball into an empty net for the opening goal.
Although Ghana believed they had equalized with Majeed Ashimeru’s long-range strike, the goal was controversially disallowed for offside, with Ransford-Yeboah deemed to have obstructed the goalkeeper’s view.
Undeterred, Ghana pressed for an equalizer in the second half and found success with Alexander Djiku’s powerful header from a Jordan Ayew cross.
As the match appeared headed for a draw, a late defensive error from Mohammed Salisu proved costly for Ghana. Salisu misplaced a pass, allowing Garry Rodrigues to seize the opportunity and score by tapping into an empty net.
This unexpected defeat places Ghana at the bottom of Group B, presenting a challenging situation as they prepare to face Egypt in four days. In contrast, Cape Verde celebrates a historic victory that propels them into their AFCON campaign with confidence.
