Former Liberian chief justice sentenced to life imprisonment for murder
Gloria Musu Scott, Liberia’s ex-Chief Justice, along with three relatives, received life imprisonment after being convicted for the murder of Charlotte Musu, reportedly Ms. Scott’s niece.
The incident occurred in Ms. Scott’s home in Brewerville, where Charlotte was killed by unidentified assailants in February of the preceding year.
Initially, Ms. Scott asserted that intruders had attacked her residence and murdered her niece.
However, following a five-month trial, a Monrovia court found Ms. Scott and her three family members guilty of the murder, as well as conspiracy and providing false information to law enforcement.
Despite maintaining their innocence and pleading not guilty throughout the trial, the court deemed the prosecution’s evidence compelling, resulting in the life imprisonment verdict for the four women.
Liberia had abolished the death penalty in July the prior year.
Ms. Scott’s legal team expressed intentions to appeal the judgement. Formerly serving as Liberia’s Chief Justice from 1997 to 2003, Ms. Scott now faces a life sentence alongside her implicated family members.
