Toyota recalls 1 million vehicles in the US over passenger airbag defect

Toyota

Toyota is issuing a recall for approximately 1 million cars and SUVs in the US due to a potential defect that might prevent the passenger airbag from deploying during a collision.

The recall affects a range of 15 Toyota and Lexus models from the 2020 and 2021 lineup, such as the Camry, Rav4, Sienna, RX350, and ES350.

The issue revolves around the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor responsible for detecting a passenger in the front seat.

This sensor, in some vehicles, was improperly manufactured and could short circuit. It determines the weight in the front seat, crucial for distinguishing between an adult and a child.

If it detects a child, it might withhold airbag deployment to prevent harm as the force of the airbag could be unsafe for a child’s size.

According to Toyota’s statement, a short circuit in this sensor might cause the airbag to fail to deploy when necessary.

While Toyota hasn’t confirmed any injuries resulting from this problem, they aim to inform affected owners by mid-February 2024.

These owners will be instructed to visit a Toyota or Lexus dealer for a complimentary inspection and replacement of the sensor to rectify the issue.
