The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, urges the Electoral Commission (EC) to maintain the 5 pm end-of-polls schedule during general elections.

The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, proposed adjusting the closing time to 3 pm for transparent vote collation. However, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu opposes the change, citing potential disenfranchisement and logistical challenges.

He emphasizes the need to stick to the 5 pm voting conclusion, expressing concern about the proposed adjustment. During a debate on the 2024 budget for the Electoral Commission, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu shares his experience of delayed voting and argues against shortening the voting window.

He suggests that maintaining the 5 pm schedule is crucial to avoid voter time loss. In contrast, Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, attributes challenges in District Level Elections to the EC’s failure to heed expert and stakeholder advice.

The debate reflects differing opinions on the proposed change in voting hours, with Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu advocating for the preservation of the established schedule for the benefit of voters.
