NAGRAT President calls for probe into AI use in 2023 WASSCE

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, is urging an investigation into the reported utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated responses by certain candidates in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that it has withheld the results of particular subjects for candidates from 235 schools who allegedly provided AI-generated answers during the 2023 WASSCE.

WAEC also invalidated the results of 3,647 candidates for bringing unauthorized materials, such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials, into the examination halls.

Additionally, the results of 839 candidates were canceled due to the possession of mobile phones in the examination halls. During an interview, Mr. Carbonu expressed apprehensions about the implicated schools, emphasizing the importance for WAEC to ensure that innocent students are not unfairly affected.

Mr. Carbonu further urged the examination body to clarify how students managed to access and use AI, questioning the timeline of when students could have obtained AI information through mobile phones.

He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of whether some teachers were involved in aiding candidates during the exam.

Acknowledging the academic achievements of Tyrone Iras Marhguy, the Rastafarian student initially denied admission to Achimota School due to his dreadlocks.

Mr. Carbonu extended his congratulations, noting Marhguy’s outstanding performance in the 2023 West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE) where he achieved an impressive 8As.
