Guinea: Explosion at fuel depot in Conakry causes multiple deaths and injuries
In Guinea’s capital, Conakry, an explosion at a fuel depot in the Kaloum neighborhood has resulted in numerous casualties.
The incident, accompanied by a fire, took place in the early hours of Monday, shortly after midnight, as reported by AFP news agency.
According to the privately-owned Le Courrier de Conakry news website, at least four fatalities have been recorded, with approximately 100 individuals sustaining injuries in the blast.
Confirming the tragic toll, a senior police officer informed Reuters, stating, “Yes, there are deaths and injuries,” although a precise count was still ongoing at the time of reporting.
As of now, the country’s military authorities have not issued any statements regarding the explosion or the reported casualties.
Conakry’s principal hospitals, Ignace Deen and Donka, are overwhelmed with numerous injured individuals seeking medical attention, as outlined by AFP.
The explosion caused significant structural damage, blowing off roofs and windows of buildings in the vicinity, compelling many residents to flee the area.
Kaloum serves as Conakry’s administrative hub, housing the presidency and most government ministries.
A local resident informed AFP that police have secured the port area, while firefighters have been dispatched to the site of the explosion to manage the aftermath.
