Good Road Systems Contributes To Food Abundancy – Agric Director

The Director of Agriculture at the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, Ebo Nkestia Junior says a good road network inhibits the supply of food chain.

According to him, there is an abundance of food produced but the poor road systems are a major challenge within the agriculture food chain. He maintains that areas where food crops are produced do not have access to transport systems, thus, creating a break in the supply chain.

He notes that food prices could decrease in the local markets if proper channels are put in place.

Mr Nketsia Junior mentioned this in an interview on the Western Echo Show on Beach FM.

“In some areas, when it rains, you cannot go there; meanwhile, that is where the food is.

Food production is going on, all I’m saying is the road network and the vehicles going to the farm gates to bring the foodstuff is where the challenge emanates from.

If we have accessible roads to the farms, food prices, and availability will always be there,”

Commenting on the government’s policies in sustaining food security, in the country, Mr. Nketsia Junior remarked that the Planting for Food and Jobs 2.0 looks forward to having a ready market, as well as providing food buffers.

As part of this, farmers will also enjoy free technical advice.

” Over the years, the government has put in some quiet policies which are yielding results. For instance, the PFJ looked at the subsidy on seeds and fertilizers, and that reduced the cost of production.

The issue of perhaps not having a ready market will be gone. And then we will have food buffers, so the aggregator will be the main person dealing with the farmer, and coming in to provide the technical know-how to the farmers,”
