Burna Boy and Rema win inaugural Billboard Afrobeats awards
Nigerian Star Burna Boy now adds Billboard Music Award to trophy cabinet.
Burna Boy, fresh off his first Grammy win earlier this year, clinched the title of the best Afrobeats act by Billboard in the US.
In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to Africa and the burgeoning artists emerging from the continent.
The addition of an Afrobeats category by Billboard echoes the genre’s immense global appeal.
In a recorded message, Burna Boy expressed optimism for the future, stating, “the future’s bright… This is just the tip of the iceberg but you’re gonna see the whole vision soon.”
Meanwhile, Rema, another Nigerian artist, received recognition for his track “Calm Down,” known for its record-breaking streaming numbers and chart success.
Receiving the award for best Afrobeats song, Rema attributed it to his fans, emphasizing it as “a celebration of unity and the global domination of Afrobeats.”
