South Tongu DCE criticized for relief items locked at Assembly
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, has strongly criticized Seth Agbi, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of South Tongu, for locking up vital relief items meant for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.
The reprimand follows widespread public outrage over the DCE’s inaction, causing essential aid to remain stranded at the District Assembly due to a lack of fuel for distribution.
During an appearance on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, Dr. Letsa condemned the DCE’s actions and expressed disappointment, stating that the DCE should have exercised better judgment.
He disclosed that the DCE has already faced a reprimand, and additional measures may be taken against him soon. Dr. Letsa emphasized the seriousness of the negligence, stating, “The first thing I did yesterday was to reprimand him. I am in discussions with the appointing authorities to see what next happens, whether a warning or something else,” he continued, hinting at the possibility of further disciplinary measures.
The DCE’s decision to lock up the relief items sparked public outcry, with many calling for his dismissal. Responding to the viral video of the DCE’s remarks, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) intervened to take over the distribution of the relief items.
Collins Avornu, NADMO director for South Tongu, clarified that the organization had been distributing relief items for the past three weeks following the Akosombo Dam spillage.
He dismissed claims that the DCE’s video prompted the distribution, stating, “We have been distributing items for the last two or three weeks. We didn’t just start the distribution of items,” in an interview.
