Commercial drivers are split on the debate regarding the reintroduction of road tolls

Driver unions in Ghana are in disagreement over the potential reintroduction of road tolls in the country.

While the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) strongly opposes the idea of bringing back tolls, the Concerned Drivers Association insists that the government should include toll collection in the 2024 budget.

In an interview with Citi News, David Agboado, the public relations officer for the Concerned Drivers Association, stressed the importance of the government addressing the challenges in road infrastructure.

He highlighted the deplorable condition of roads and suggested that toll collection could create job opportunities for physically challenged individuals to contribute to road repairs.

In response to this, Abass Imoro, the relations officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, expressed concerns about the potential reinstatement of tolls.

He argued that it might not benefit Ghanaians and could lead to further mismanagement of funds by authorities.

Imoro lamented the lack of transparency in the collection of toll fees, citing issues raised by those managing toll stations and discrepancies in the reported amounts received by the Roads and Highways Ministry.
