UN: Over one million people flee Sudan as conflict ‘spirals out of control’

UN

A million or more Sudanese have sought asylum in neighboring nations, according to UN agencies, and deaths are being caused by a lack of food and essential services within the country.

The lack of medical supplies and the long-term effects of farmers being unable to plant their fields were both highlighted by the agencies on Tuesday. They declared that “the situation is spiraling out of control”.

The violent conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has destroyed Khartoum’s capital and sparked ethnically motivated attacks in Darfur, raising the possibility of a protracted civil war and regional instability.

Over four million people have fled the fighting, either within the war-torn country or as refugees to neighboring states, according to the agencies, and over 14 million children need humanitarian aid.

1,017,449 Sudanese have fled the conflict into nearby countries, many of which were already experiencing war or economic hardship. The International Organization for Migration’s most recent weekly statistics place the number of internally displaced people in Sudan at 3,433,025.

Both the military and the RSF have been charged with violating human rights by the UN and human rights organizations. These allegations have been denied by each force.

The UN has so far received 25% of the $ $2.57 billion it requested to aid Sudanese citizens and 31% of the $566 million it requested to aid refugees.

UN organizations gave the Sudanese people their word that they would “continue to push for access to all people and in all areas of Sudan to bring humanitarian supplies and essential services”.

They called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and demanded the parties to the conflict “grant us safe and unfettered access” to provide aid.
