Major Australian port operator resumes operations after cyber-attack disruption
A major Australian port operator, DP World Australia, has successfully restored its operations after a cyberattack disrupted container terminals in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth from Friday to Monday morning.
The company, managing about 40% of the country’s goods movement, disconnected its ports from the internet as a precaution.
DP World Australia, a unit of Dubai state-owned DP World, reported that its ports resumed operations at 9 am local time “following successful tests of key systems overnight.”
It anticipates approximately 5,000 containers to move out of the four terminals today.
Darren Goldie, the government’s Cyber Security Coordinator, noted on Monday that the operator was making “good progress” in bringing its sites back online.
The government has yet to identify the perpetrators of the cyberattack, prompting the firm to disconnect its ports from the internet on Friday.
DP World stated that halting internet connectivity was a preventive measure to avoid “any ongoing unauthorized access” to its network.
Despite the resumption of port operations, DP World emphasized that the incident is not concluded.
The company is still actively investigating the disruption and fortifying its systems against cyber threats.
“The resumption of port operations does not mean that this incident has concluded. DP World Australia’s investigation and ongoing remediation work are likely to continue for some time,” the company added.
