Sports Journalism: A Watchdog For Society Or A Pet For Showbiz?

Sports journalism is a form of writing, broadcasting, and coverage that covers events and issues related to athletic pursuits.

Sports journalists carry out a variety of work responsibilities including compiling game data, speaking with coaches and players, and providing game commentary through different forms of media for instance; print, radio, television, and the internet.

Sports Journalists have had to continually adjust to technological advancements and demands, just like other media, yet they still manage to garner substantial coverage on print, broadcast, and digital channels.

Sports journalism is frequently referred to as a department where frivolous hobbies take precedence over the pursuit of important news. As a result, its journalists are doubted with regard to their level of professionalism.

What these arguments fail to acknowledge is the importance of this subfield in light of the volume of sports content created across media, the sheer number of journalists working on news stories, and its ability to draw the attention of readers, viewers and authorities while projecting talents and providing constructive criticism.

In order to promote accountability especially in the world of sports, journalists, authors, or publishers fact-check and interview public figures and leaders as part of watchdog journalism.

In order to hold elected officials accountable, “watchdog journalists” gather information about the deeds of those in authority and educate the public. This necessitates keeping a certain amount of professional distance from those in authority.

Sports draw audiences, and media exposure also draws money, therefore there is a symbiotic link between sports and media. Sports journalists are now expected to write and talk about sports as entertainment while attempting to uphold journalistic norms, which has had a paradoxical effect on them.

Any type of journalism that focuses on popular culture, the entertainment industry, and its goods is referred to as entertainment journalism and so entertainment journalism or showbiz is a form of journalism in itself. Like fashion journalism, entertainment journalism covers news related to celebrities, stars, and the creative industry while also aiming to reach audiences outside of those in the sector.

Lifestyle, television and film, theatre, music, video games, and celebrity coverage are typical types.

The concept and perception of sports being a pet for showbiz is highlighted by the desire of people to be entertained while they follow and watch sporting games like football, basketball, boxing and so on.

Sports undoubtedly is entertaining but the concept gains validation when on-field action and the desire to be entertained is prioritised over ensuring that football governing bodies and leaders holding positions in the area of sports are accountable.

Sports journalism today is seen as a dose of entertainment for consumers and sports lovers but for the sports journalist the prime role and focus is on the advancement of sports and that includes calling for accountability on the part of leaders.

It is fair to say that as a watchdog of society and a pet for showbiz because the consumer and journalist have different expectations but the populace who are more than journalists will always have the greater claim.
