The NPP will choose its presidential candidate today

Today, over 200,000 delegates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in all 275 constituencies across the country are participating in the selection of a presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.

Initially, ten candidates, including an incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), the Vice President, former ministers, and MPs, expressed their interest in representing the party.

However, the field was narrowed down to five following the August 26 Super Delegates Conference.

During the Super Delegates Conference, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia emerged as the winner with 68.15 percent of the total votes, while Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central, secured the second position, and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen came in third.

Unsatisfied with the outcome and expressing concerns over treatment by the NPP leadership, Alan Kyerematen resigned from the party to establish the Movement for Change and run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.

To determine the fifth aspirant, a tiebreaker was required between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh, but the former withdrew from the scheduled September 2 run-off.

A total of 203,439 delegates are expected to participate in the election, including 436 delegates voting at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.

In the Ashanti Region, 34,987 delegates are eligible to vote, with 4,204 delegates in the Ahafo Region, and 39,134 in the Greater Accra Region. Volta has 11,995 delegates.

Voting centers have been established in all 275 constituencies throughout the country.

The current contest involves MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

In an effort to prevent resignations stemming from the primary, all four candidates signed an agreement on October 2, committing not to resign from the party in the event of their defeat.
