Cabinet initiates a three-day retreat today to address economic and dam spillage crisis
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Cabinet are commencing a three-day retreat to address the nation’s economic situation and the humanitarian crisis caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in various areas of Lower Volta.
This retreat follows the recent approval by the International Monetary Fund of the next tranche of $600 million in balance of payment support for Ghana, following a staff agreement.
During this retreat, the government will also discuss the extensive impact of the dam spillage, which has left thousands of people homeless in the Volta, Eastern, and parts of the Greater Accra Regions.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) initiated the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, due to a sustained rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.
As a result, many residents in South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and several other areas have had their homes submerged due to the spillage.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited affected residents in the Mepe and surrounding areas to assess the situation and pledged the government’s commitment to provide assistance to flood victims.
He mentioned that an inter-ministerial committee had been established to address the immediate relief needs of victims and to ensure such a catastrophic event does not recur in the future.
Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of addressing both immediate relief and long-term strategies for disaster prevention.
