A tax consultant, Dr. Abdallah Ali-Nakyea says the government should not scrap the COVID-19 levy since it was enacted not only to solve the COVID-19 pandemic but also to deal with other health-related issues.
Dr. Ali-Nakyea, speaking with the media, says the abolishment of the levies will require another source of revenue generation to curb any unforeseen health issues that may occur in the future.
He states that there should be a detailed account of funds generated from taxation, as this will encourage the citizens to be tax-compliant.
” It is not a one-off imposition of a tax but to resolve a series of issues that are COVID-19 related because if you take the preamble of the law, it tells you to meet COVID-19 expenditures and related matters.
So every aftermath event of the covid-19, this fund is supposed to be geared towards it.
Supposing it has been a health recovery levy without being tied to COVID then of course today with our problems with dialysis, we should be able to have funds to go and resolve the issue,” Dr. Ali-Nakyea.
Tax expert and consultant Abdallah Ali-Nakyea has opposed any move or attempt to scrap the COVID-19 Levy even though the disease is no longer a health threat globally.
The 1% levy was introduced by the government during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana to provide financial support in combating the virus and its effects.
