GMeT urges flood victims to relocate, warns of more rain in the Lower Volta Basin

GMeT

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning of more rainfall in the lower Volta basin area, which is currently experiencing flooding due to the release of water from the Akosombo Dam.

GMeT has called on the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other relevant agencies to take action to relocate those affected to safer areas.

Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of Central Analysis and Forecasting at GMeT, stressed the importance of flood victims following NADMO’s guidance and promptly relocating to mitigate further risks.

She also stated that rain is still expected in the North Tongu region and its surroundings until the 23rd of October.

The ongoing flooding has resulted from the deliberate release of water from the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority (VRA). While this action is necessary to maintain dam integrity, it has caused significant disruption and distress to residents in the affected areas, including Mepe in the North Tongu district.

Homes, farmlands, and even cemeteries have been submerged, leading to the displacement of people and the interruption of essential services like water and electricity.

The VRA has emphasized the importance of controlled spillage to prevent potential dam failure, as the dams have reached their capacity due to heavy upstream rainfall.

This decision aims to ensure the structural integrity of the dams, despite the challenges it poses to the affected communities.
