COP Mensah hopeful of being exonerated after parliamentary committee investigation

COP Mensah

COP retired Alex George Mensah, a key witness in the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has expressed confidence in being vindicated once the parliamentary committee concludes its investigation.

COP retired Alex George Mensah, during his appearance before the committee, suggested that the IGP lacked the capacity to lead the Ghana Police Service.

A leaked audio recording, widely circulated on social media, purportedly contains conversations among three senior police officers discussing plans and strategies for potentially ousting the current IGP. These discussions allegedly involve Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to TV3 News ahead of the resumption of the committee’s session on October 10, 2023, COP retired Alex George Mensah expressed hope that the truth would be revealed soon.

“I will be vindicated, I know what happened. Some things on the tape are lies, what I said, I said the truth and I will say it again anywhere, but I’m not ready to discuss it here as I said, because it’s before a committee. And I hope, we will wait until the committee comes out with their report, then everybody will know the truth,” COP retired Alex George Mensah stated.

On September 7, the Police Service took action by interdicting COP retired Alex George and two other high-ranking officers, Superintendent George Asare and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi.

However, the Ghana Police Service later suspended the interdiction of these three senior officers. In a statement dated September 7, they explained that this decision was made to avoid affecting the ongoing parliamentary probe.
