In a statement released on Thursday, October 5, 2023, to commemorate this year’s World Teachers Day, former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), once again underscored the paramount importance of teachers in Ghana’s educational landscape.

He emphasized the pivotal role they play in shaping the future of the nation by imparting knowledge and values to the youth.

John Mahama reiterated his commitment to ensuring a brighter future for teachers and a high-quality education system under his potential future administration.

Mahama recognized that for Ghana to make substantial progress towards prosperity, it must prioritize the improvement of teaching and learning. He firmly believes that teachers are the backbone of the education system and that they should be adequately equipped with the necessary resources, tools, support, and training.

“Improving teaching and learning must be a top priority for Ghana as we forge ahead towards a more prosperous future. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and we must provide them with the resources, tools, support, and training to enable them to deliver good quality education to our children.”

“To this end, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) remains committed to investing in teacher education and professional development programmes.”

This empowerment, he argued, would enable teachers to provide top-notch education to the country’s children, thereby laying the foundation for Ghana’s development.

The former president highlighted the NDC’s unwavering dedication to investing in teacher education and professional development programs. Recognizing that well-trained and motivated teachers are essential to unlocking students’ full potential, Mahama stressed the importance of providing teachers with the necessary tools and techniques to adapt to the evolving needs of the education system.

“We also recognize the importance of addressing teachers’ challenges, including the need for better remuneration and improved working conditions. Our pledge to Ghanaian teachers, on page 69 of our People’s Manifesto of 2020, remains true today. Education is a fundamental right, and every child in Ghana deserves equal access to quality education.”

Furthermore, Mahama acknowledged the challenges faced by teachers, such as the need for improved remuneration and better working conditions.

He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing these issues, citing the NDC’s pledge to provide quality education and equal access to every child in Ghana. Mahama firmly believes that education is a fundamental right and that Ghanaian students deserve nothing less than the best.

Looking ahead, Mahama’s administration aims to strengthen the implementation of the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. This will involve investing in infrastructure, expanding access to educational resources, and enhancing the overall learning environment in the country’s SHSs.

By doing so, Mahama hopes to ensure that every Ghanaian student receives the quality education they deserve.

“My administration will strengthen the implementation of the free SHS policy by investing in infrastructure, expanding access to educational resources, and improving the overall learning environment in our Senior High Schools,” Mr Mahama stated.

In his statement, Mahama not only celebrated teachers for their vital contributions but also signaled his commitment to their well-being and the enhancement of Ghana’s education system.
