High Taxes Hampering Growth Of Ghanaian Businesses – Executive Secretary, Exporters and Importers Association

The Executive Secretary of the Exporters and Importers Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, says that the high taxes imposed by the government on goods at the ports are hampering the growth of business in the country.

” Prices of goods are so high due to the taxes the government has imposed on the business community.
The COVID Levy, an upfront tax, Special import duty, and the inflation rate cannot be left out.

As much, as you see the inflation going up and down, where the Bank of Ghana is doing nothing to fight inflation,”

Mr. Awingobit, speaking on the Western Echo program on Beach FM, mentioned some taxes that he described as burdensome on Ghanaian businesses.

He blamed the ailing economy on reckless spending on the part of the government.

Mr Awingobit says the government must create an enabling environment for the business community to flourish and not burden them with taxes.

” With the business community, the government has no choice but to provide an enabling environment for the business community to flourish. And it’s not only importers that are complaining, even the manufacturers are also complaining.

We are saddled with so much taxes and policies. Ghanaians voted for you to correct this mess, so if you are not delivering, we will hold you accountable.”
