Nigeria: Police launch probe into death of Afropop star MohBad

Nigeria

The secret police of Nigeria have been invited to assist in the Lagos state government’s investigation into the death of Afrobeats musician MohBad.

The 27-year-old singer, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died a week ago in a Lagos hospital. The musician reportedly sought treatment for an infected injury, according to a source who spoke to Nigeria’s Punch newspaper. However, this has not been confirmed, and the precise circumstances have not been made public.

His passing last Tuesday shocked  his  fans and colleagues, and the hashtag #justiceformohbad has been trending on X, formerly known as Twitter, with many urging an investigation.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos, has now intervened, tweeting: “I have instructed that all those who may have played any role whatsoever in any event leading to the death of MohBad be made to face the law after a thorough investigation.”

The Afropop singer’s body will be exhumed and an autopsy will be performed, according to a 13-person special investigative team that the regional police have announced.

Some tributes have suggested that the singer had been bullied within the music industry while under the influence of strong emotions.

His former boss, Naira Marley, with whom he had a falling out after leaving the Nigerian musician’s label, Marlian Records, last year, has come under particular fire.

It prompted some of the biggest radio stations in south-western Nigeria, to ban  Bob Marley’s music from the airwaves while the matter was being investigated.

A thorough investigation into MohBad’s death has been demanded by Marley, who has also vowed to help in “uncovering any foul play or injustice”.
