Parliamentary committee probing leaked IGP tape to resume hearings on October 2

The parliamentary committee responsible for probing the leaked tape against the IGP Dampare, is set to reconvene its sessions on October 2.

The parliamentary committee responsible for investigating the leaked audio related to the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is set to reconvene its sessions on Monday, October 2.

Chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea, the committee has expressed its commitment to ensuring swift proceedings.

During a recent update on the committee’s activities, Hon. Atta Akyea emphasized the importance of expediting the inquiry while maintaining thoroughness. He cited the significance of the matter for national security and the need to conclude the investigation promptly.

Samuel Atta Akyea provided insights into the recent session, revealing that the IGP had been engaged in other matters of national importance during his appearance.

The committee had the opportunity to question Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), before adjourning. Atta Akyea underscored that the committee’s aim was to conduct a comprehensive inquiry without unnecessary delays.

“The IGP was attending to some other important matter of national interest. We asked Bugri Naabu a few questions and then we adjourned. We said because of the nature of what is happening, we want to do a thorough job and end quickly.

“The nation cannot be on this matter for too long. It has a bearing on the security of this country. The head of internal security, IGP, is part of what we are trying to interrogate, and we should end as quickly as possible.

To accommodate the needs of the IGP’s legal team, led by lawyer Kwame Gyan, the committee provided requested transcriptions.

Proceedings are scheduled to resume on October 2 and will extend to October 5, spanning five consecutive days. It is anticipated that by the end of these sessions, the committee will have concluded its investigations and will be ready to compile its report.

“The lawyer of the IGP, Kwame Gyan said they needed the transcriptions, so we gave them. Proceedings have been adjourned to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th October. There’s going to be a continuation of proceedings for five days. By this time, we would have probably concluded proceedings, and we would be able to write our report. These are the matters that ensued today,” Atta Akyea maintained.

Notably, during his appearance before the committee on September 12, the IGP vehemently denied any working relationship with Daniel Bugri Naabu, addressing one of the key aspects of the leaked tape.

In addition to these developments, the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, and the legal counsel for the Inspector General of Police, Kwame Gyan, held an in-camera hearing with the ad-hoc committee. This confidential session was intended to provide further insights into the matter.
