Morocco faces criticism for slow response to earthquake

The speed of the Moroccan government’s response to Friday’s earthquake, which is now known to have killed more than 2,800 people, has drawn criticism in the northwest African country.

In remote areas of the Atlas mountains, which have been most severely affected, heavy lifting equipment has started to arrive.

However, in many places, locals have been sifting through the wreckage of demolished houses themselves.

Maati Monjib, a human rights activist in Rabat, told the media that he didn’t understand why the Moroccan government hadn’t expanded its request for assistance from outside sources.

Britain, Spain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates are the four nations whose emergency aid the authorities have accepted.
