Sudan: RSF group condemns US sanctions against two of its leaders

US sanctions against two of the group’s leaders have been criticized by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who called them “unfair and shocking”.

In response to alleged rights violations, the US imposed financial sanctions on RSF deputy leader Abdel Rahim Dagalo on Wednesday and a travel ban on Gen Abdul Rahman Juma, the group’s commander in the state of West Darfur.

The US sanctions were referred to as “shocking, unfortunate, and unfair” by the RSF in a statement published on X (previously Twitter) on Thursday.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the RSF described the US sanctions as “shocking, unfortunate and unfair”.

It said they “will not help achieve one of the core goals that should be focused on, which is to find a comprehensive solution to the crisis in our country”.

The group said the US had ignored “heinous crimes” committed by the Sudanese regular army, including the indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas and the torturing of anti-war protestors.

The paramilitary group claimed that the US-led efforts to “bring about lasting peace in our country” would be hampered by the sanctions.

Washington also imposed sanctions in June on companies run by the rival military factions in Sudan.
