NIA commences the second phase of registering new applicants for the Ghana Card today

NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that Phase II of Ghana Card registration for new applicants will commence on Monday, September 4, 2023.

This decision comes after the NIA terminated the first phase of registration, which was originally intended for public sector employees on the government payroll. The NIA attributed the discontinuation of the first phase to the low turnout of public sector workers.

In a statement, the NIA explained that the initial phase was based on estimates from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, which indicated that there were approximately 250,000 to 260,000 public sector workers without Ghana Cards.

However, only 87 of the targeted beneficiaries appeared for registration, which was initially scheduled to run from August 28 to September 8, 2023. Consequently, the NIA decided to halt this phase and proceed to Phase II.

The free registration service will be available at NIA’s 276 District Offices nationwide, as well as at NIA Regional Offices in Accra, Bolgatanga, Cape Coast, Dambai, Damongo, Goaso, Nalerigu, and Wa.

As stated in the announcement, “Thus, Phase II of the registration exercise will begin tomorrow, Monday, 4th September 2023. This is to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the use of public resources and to ensure that other members of the public are able to access NIA’s services.”

“As a result, effective tomorrow, Monday, 4th September 2023, Phase II of the Ghana Card Registration exercise will commence, and all Ghanaians aged 15 years and above are eligible to register for the Ghana Card free charge as first-time applicants at any of the NIA’s 276 District Offices across the country. This free registration service is also available at NIA Regional Offices in Accra, Bolgatanga, Cape Coast, Dambai, Damongo, Goaso, Nalerigu and Wa.”
