Investigation of the purported conspiracy to remove the IGP will convene again today
The Parliamentary Committee, which is currently conducting an inquiry into a leaked audio recording allegedly involving a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, will resume its proceedings on September 4, 2023.
Chief Bugri Naabu, the main witness, has already been questioned by the committee. Subsequently, two police officers, namely Supt Emmanuel Gyebi and Commissioner George Mensah, a key witness, have also undergone rigorous interrogation by the committee chaired by Atta Akyea. The third police officer, Supt George Asare, is scheduled to appear before the committee today.
Concerning the assertion made by COP George Mensah that the IGP was involved in recording the leaked tape and possesses the original copy, which could be provided if requested by the committee, there have been diverse opinions expressed.
While James Agalga, a committee member involved in the investigation, suggested the possibility of inviting the IGP to aid in the inquiry, former Deputy Defence Minister Major Derrick Oduro (Retired) disagreed.
Major Derrick Oduro stated, “There is no need for the IGP to be invited because it is an accusation against him and I don’t know the terms of reference [of the Committee] and we are talking about a leaked tape, and I am not sure the terms of reference cover anything that will warrant the invitation of the IGP, and so I don’t think it is in a good direction for them to invite the IGP.”
