Atta Akyea states any witness attempting to manipulate with leaked audio will be jailed

Samuel Atta Akyea, who chairs the committee investigating the leaked tape regarding the plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has strongly suggested that any witness attempting to manipulate the controversial audio will potentially face imprisonment.

He made it clear that even individuals outside of the committee who try to alter the tape will not be exempt from consequences.

Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), confirmed the authenticity of the leaked tape. However, COP George Alex Mensah, one of the officers implicated in the recording, disputed its legitimacy during his appearance before the committee.

He argued that the audio had been extensively “edited” and therefore he could not confirm all of its details.

COP Mensah’s legal team also requested approximately an hour and a half to compare the transcript with the audio provided to them. Nonetheless, Mr. Atta Akyea issued a warning that COP Mensah could potentially face legal consequences if he attempted to tamper with the provided tape.

He stated, “There’s no way a witness before this committee would want a sub evidence and we will not give him. But if the witness is sufficiently funny and wants to doctor what we have given him, he’s in jail already, and he knows, so whether he will tamper with the evidence that we will graciously give him, he should go ahead and do it. It’s called evidence tampering. We will not stop you if you want to get the audio and the transcribed version.”

Atta Akyea, the committee’s chairman, assured that the committee had no intention of humiliating any of the implicated officers.

He stated, “There is no incentive to shame or mess up anybody.”

The committee adjourned to allow COP George Alex Mensah to review the audio along with the transcription.

This decision followed his request to the committee for access to the audio and time to examine both the transcription and the audio.
