Takoradi New Market: CorpNation purchases accumulated plastic waste from market women after launching 4R+ initiative

After months of engagement and training of market women in the New Takoradi Market on the segregation and benefits of plastic waste, not-for-profit sustainable development organization, CorpNation Foundation, has initiated it’s first purchase of plastic waste generated by the market.

During the weighing session of the plastic waste, Founder of CorpNation Foundation, Saviour Kwaku Adzika (Sayvee) told Beach FM that, “six weeks ago we came here to launch this waste management project and sensitize them on the benefits of segregating plastic waste. We have been here on weekly basis. It’s about time to weigh in the plastic waste they have currently and purchase them to show them how beneficial it is to keep plastic waste.”

“All of these plastic waste would have been sent to land-fill sites and the waste will soon find its way back into our gutters, making life unbearable for them leading to floods and a breading ground for mosquitoes. So this is the first of payments to be made to them. We believe this will serve as a motivation to them to do more and most especially expand it other markets”, Sayvee stressed.

Mr Kwaku Adzika said he was impressed with the amount of waste accumulated by the market women, adding that, the purchase will motivate them to do more.

“As it stands now we have recorded 100kg of plastic waste even though they are compressed we can say it’s about 4 to 5 cubic meters volume of plastic we’ve been able to accrue here. It is very impressive in my opinion. I see the exuberance on the side of the market women, showing hoe delighted they are to have been part of the project. I’m sure this payments will drive more energy into the project.”

After receiving payments for the plastic waste accrued, the Supervisor of the market, Hannah Dadzie in expressing excitement, thanked CorpNation Foundation for bringing the 4R+ initiative to them. She furthered that, their market is becoming clean because plastic waste is no longer dropped on the floor but in designated baskets which in turn become money after sale.

“We thank CorpNation for this initiative and educating us on the benefits of segregating plastic waste to be sold, I’m very happy today. I’ll like to entreat all and sundry to make a conscious effort to gather plastic waste in their homes because we have been enlightened to know that plastic waste is money.”

“We have seen a lot of improvement in our market because people no longer drop plastic waste on the floor, but instead in our designated waste baskets. We believe that as the days go by, our markets will be free of plastic waste -thanks to CorpNation Foundation.”

The Founder of CorpNation added that the initiative will soon be expanded to various societies, communities and other markets.

“The size of this market informed our decision to come here, although we’ve already launched this project at the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS). We need to nurture and see what modifications we can add up and take it up to not only market places but other settlements in our societies/communities.
