Matheus Nunes joins Man City from Wolves

In a £53 million deal, Manchester City has secured the signing of midfielder Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves).

This transfer represents a record sale for Wolves, who will also benefit from a 10 percent sell-on fee on any future profit that Manchester City may make on Nunes.

Nunes, a former Sporting player, becomes Manchester City’s fourth major summer signing, following the arrivals of Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, and Jeremy Doku, bringing the treble winners’ total spending to £216.1 million.

The club sought a creative midfielder after Kevin De Bruyne was sidelined for several months due to a hamstring injury sustained in the opening game of the season against Burnley.

Nunes resorted to going on strike in the final week of the transfer window in an attempt to push through his move to the Etihad. While he has displayed glimpses of his quality, including a stunning volley against Chelsea last season, he has only scored one goal for the club in 41 appearances.

Wolves had signed Nunes in a club-record deal worth £42.2 million last summer, consisting of an initial £38 million plus £4.2 million in add-ons. Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, had praised Nunes as “one of the best players in the world today” after a Champions League match against Sporting in February of the previous year, expressing his admiration for the player.

Despite his occasional flashes of brilliance, Nunes’ signing by City remains intriguing, as he has yet to fully harness his potential, exemplified by his lone Premier League goal – a spectacular strike against Chelsea that made it onto the shortlist for Goal of the Season.
